As the weather cools off, many of us are drawn to blackcurrants to help us get through the chilly season. From hot drinks to lozenges and cough syrup, it’s a popular protective ingredient for winter wellness. But what you may not know is that blackcurrant’s protective properties extend beyond ingesting.
All SKIN by ecostore products contain New Zealand bioactives and other gentle plant-based ingredients chosen for their high nutrient levels. But this month we’re taking a closer look at blackcurrant seed oil, a key ingredient at active quantities in products specially formulated for normal to dry skin types (this is the green and white range, if you’re looking).
Our skincare development chemists chose nutrient-rich blackcurrant oil for a whole punnet of skin-loving reasons. We source our blackcurrant oil from sunny Nelson at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. The blackcurrants grown here are some of the most nutritious in the world. Apart from having more antioxidant compounds (including potent phenolics anthocyanins and flavonoids) than other berries, they contain very high levels of Vitamin C and Vitamin E. The intense sunshine this region is known for causes the very high levels of protective anthocyanins in the blackcurrants. In fact, these specially bred varieties contain some of the highest anthocyanin levels in the world.
Blackcurrant seed oil is also rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9 essential fatty acids (EFAs), as well as gamma-linolenic (GLA) and stearidonic acids, which give the oil its anti-inflammatory and smoothing properties. Essential fatty acids can’t be made by your skin, so you need to get them from your diet or in active amounts in your skincare to benefit skin health.
When applied to the skin, EFAs support the structure and function of the skin barrier and skin cell membranes, reducing trans-epidermal water loss. This improves moisture and hydration, while also biologically strengthening the integrity of the skin barrier. EFAs offer protection against external stresses including winter air conditioning, detergents, microbes and contact allergens, as well as enhancing healing and skin barrier.
The antioxidants in this oil protects the skins cells from free radical induced damaged such as causing skin dryness, skin breakouts and inflammation. These free radicals originate from environmental pollutants such tobacco smoke, pesticides and air pollutants. The not only hydrates the skin cells but also nourish and replenish the cells underneath to repair and strengthen. It can also be used to slow premature aging.
The blackcurrant oil used in SKIN by ecostore is made from blackcurrant seeds, which are a by-product of making blackcurrant juice. Using a renewable by-product as an ingredient helps to conserve resources and enables the blackcurrant growers to reduce waste.
Nourishing blackcurrant seed oil has been shown to support skin’s elasticity, as well as helping to sooth and protect against chronic skin irritations like dermatitis and eczema.
You’ll find this very special skin loving ingredient in the SKIN by ecostore Normal to Dry range: including the Gentle Cleanser, Hydrating Moisturiser, Replenishing Night Cream and Multi-nutrient Facial Oil.
