We tend to think of fitness and movement as a way to boost our physical strength and flexibility, warm up and help us feel good. But it can also contribute to healthy skin in many ways.

It’s great when we find products that work really well for our skin, but these aren’t the only things we can have in our arsenal of care. Exercise is also a key weapon!

We tend to think of fitness and movement as a way to boost our physical strength and flexibility, warm up and help us feel good. But it can also contribute to healthy skin in many ways.

Going with the flow

Firstly, that flush in the face and other areas you get during a workout comes from a strong flow of oxygenated blood to the skin. That helps deliver nutrients to the skin and can give us higher levels of collagen. That same blood flow also helps with the removal of cellular waste from the inside.

Working up a sweat

Dirt and cells can clog our pores, but during exercise, sweat helps remove this debris. So while When we work out we’re also helping with the regulated production of the skin’s natural oils. Cleaning away sweat after exercising is commonly recommended though, so that dirt and oil doesn’t stay on the skin and clog pores.

De-stress

Different types of movement can also contribute to stable levels of cortisol - the stress hormone – and that means less chance of breakouts that can be spurred by cortisol and the over-production of the skin’s natural oils. Cortisol has also been associated with lowered collagen levels. With a surge in endorphins from exercise, de-stressing can also mean less risk of aggravating stress-related skin conditions.

Avoid damage

If you’re exercising outdoors, it’s important to protect yourself from sun damage and from drying your skin out after exposure to the elements.
